Dear Patient Reader,

A Written Triptych of Creation II

In the chronology of art history and specifically in Western art, the Renaissance had a tremendous role in the development of art and architecture in Europe. The Renaissance not only impacted the shaping of European art but European society, culture, and their economy.

You might have heard of the great masters and their masterpieces, like Michelangelo’s David and Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo of the High Renaissance (c. 1512) is an example. Forming part of the Sistine’s Chapel ceiling (also painted by Michelangelo, c. 1508-12), the Creation of Adam illustrates the Biblical creation narrative from the Book of Genesis where God gives life to Adam. It is a beautifully done prophetic representation. It is a moment in time, in creation, and a becoming for those who believe it is how we came to be on this earth.

It is an iconic painting with the just about-to-touch fingers of God and Adam, reaching out to each other. It is also Michelangelo’s study and representation of the human anatomy in all its ‘glorious’ idealism which set an example for several artists during and after the Renaissance.

Funnily enough and to no surprise there are several reproductions of the Creation of Adam, which includes parodies as well. Do you know the meme which goes “I just want someone to look at me the way I look at pizza”? Well, let us appreciate Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam and one of its many parodies the way many of us look at pizza.
